B. General Description of Position:
The position of Director of Music at Unity of Washington, DC is part-time. The Director of Music will plan, schedule and orchestrate the musical aspects of Sunday worship services, as well as special services, events and programs. The Director of Music will direct the Adult Choir; recruit, rehearse, and direct the worship instrumentalists and vocalists. The Director of Music will demonstrate successful leadership and development of the music ministry of Unity of Washington, DC.
Salary Range: $45K - $50K Annually
Benefits: One month paid vacation Annually
C. Position Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and implement appropriate music for Sunday worship services, and for midweek and special services as required, after consulting with minister regarding theme.
- Recruit, train and rehearse members of the choir and/or music team, if applicable.
- Provide administrative assistance to any ensembles not under his/her direction.
- Contract with individual musicians, both from within and without the community, to provide special music as necessary. Accompany and rehearse with guests as needed.
- Plan and produce special musical concerts and/or workshops (examples: Spring concert and Christmas concert).
- Attend at least one conference or workshop annually to remain up-to-date on the latest music and trends in New Thought and worship music and ministry.
- Coordinate with sound team regularly to plan for requirements.
- Attend staff meetings, if applicable.
- Provide administrative support for all of the above, to include fundraising, budget. proposals, communications with and training of volunteer musicians, etc.
- Select, purchase and maintain music resources within budget guidelines and restrictions.
- Provide budget information to Senior Minister and/or Business Manager on a regular basis.
- Oversee the maintenance and care of all musical equipment.
- Ensure compliance with all copyright and licensure requirements for all music used by the music department.
D. Position Qualifications
- Knowledge of Unity and New Thought teachings and principles.
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in music required.
- 5 years' church music experience preferred.
- Experience in choral direction, arranging, accompanying.
- Piano skills for leading congregational singing.
- Solo performance experience.
- Ability to perform and lead various styles of music.
- The ability to lead and inspire volunteers.
- High level of overall musicianship.
Performance Standards for the Director of Music
Provide Music for Sunday Services (see position description)
- A quarterly schedule of all soloists and choir dates shall be submitted to the Senior Minister by the start of each quarter.
- A quarterly budget of all music expenses will be submitted at the start of each quarter and approved by the Senior Minister. A copy will be given to the Business Manager.
- The Director of Music will be expected to remain within the approved budget.
- The Director of Music shall play prelude music at the beginning of each service unless other music has been designated by the Senior Minister and postlude music at the end of each service.
- The Director of Music will plan and coordinate with the worship instrumentalists, all music for Sunday services, special events and programs.
- A wide variety of music and new soloists will be offered at least once a quarter.
Provide Music for Special Services, Events and Programs
- A schedule of music for all special services shall be submitted two weeks prior to the service.
- A quarterly schedule of all soloists shall be submitted to the Senior Minister by the start of each quarter.
- The Director of Music will plan and coordinate with the worship instrumentalists all music for these events.
- The Director of Music will remain in the service for the entire service to ensure a smooth transition into the meditation and close of the service
- A Prelude shall be played prior to the beginning of the service unless other music has been designated by the Senior Minister, and a postlude at the end of each service.
- The Director of Music shall coordinate with the Senior Minister to discuss any new formatting of the service.
Provide Music for Funerals/Memorial Services/Weddings
- The Director of Music is expected to assist with coordinating the music for Funerals/Memorials Services/Weddings as requested by the Senior Minister.
- Additional compensation is available for these services.
Provide Special Concerts
- The Director of Music shall coordinate two concerts annually: Spring and Christmas.
- Any other concerts will be scheduled in advance and discussed with the Senior Minister.
