HISTORIC PLEASANT GREEN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
INTERIM PASTORAL VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church (HPGMBC) of Lexington, Kentucky is prayerfully seeking a full-time Interim Pastor.
The Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church is the Oldest African American Church West of the Alleghany Mountains, having been established in 1790 in Lexington, Kentucky. Over Her blessed 234 years of service, HPGMBC has been engaged in soul winning and the edification of the spiritual lives of Her members. During this period, there have been only 19 Pastors. Prior to the search for our 20th Pastor, we are seeking an Interim Pastor who will provide pastoral care and duties as we transition into the search for a pastor. It is our prayer that the Interim Pastor will carry on the rich heritage that HPGMBC has established over the years. This heritage includes Pastoral leadership and evangelism along with Spirit-filled Services and community involvement.
All candidates must be born again, baptized believers in Jesus Christ. He must be called by God and exemplify the characteristics outlined in I Timothy 3:2-7 and Titus 1:6-9.
The candidate must have the ability and willingness to be the Spiritual Leader of the Church. He needs to exhibit and demonstrate Christian characteristics that would be a model for the congregation to emulate. Also, this individual must have a strong ability to build interrelationships, perform the duties and responsibilities of the Interim Pastor, as well as meet the qualifications set forth in this Interim Pastoral Vacancy Announcement. Lastly, he must have the ability and willingness to fulfill the Spiritual needs of the membership of our Church.
The Interim Pastor is accountable to the Church Clerk and the Chairman of the Body of Deacons to provide pastoral and administrative leadership for the church and shall use his skills in proclamation and pastoral care to minister to the needs of persons in the church and community as negotiated in a covenant agreement.
The following are key elements of the Interim Pastor's position description:
Spiritual Leader of the Church
- Prepare for and preach at worship services on Sunday morning and Sunday evening
- Attend mid-week prayer/Bible study service
- Minister to the sick in the hospitals, homebound and nursing homes as needed
- Prepare for and conduct funerals and weddings
- Prepare for and serve as moderator for church business meetings (includes Joint Board and Church Meetings)
- Attend other church functions upon request (e.g., class socials, anniversaries, prayer breakfasts, denominational meetings, conventions, etc.)
- Preside and administer the ordinances of the church: Baptism and the Lord's Supper
- Administer the vote of intake of new members
- Confidently counsel members on a broad range of subjects and build relationships inside and outside the Church
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in church outreach
- Meet with the Deacons upon request
- Meet with other church committees upon request (e.g., trustees and search committee)
Personal Christian Characteristics
- Should be a model to the congregation of what a Christian should be by displaying a Christian, God-fearing nature and spirit
- Maintain a high standard of personal conduct, integrity and Christian leadership qualities while displaying a mature Christian faith, and a God-fearing nature and spirit
- Is an informed decision-maker and receptive to God's Will and Directions
- Is a compassionate listener and communicator
- Is able to plan a balance of worship, teaching and fellowship experience for members
- Spend significant time in Prayer and Bible Study
Qualifications
- Should have years of successful Pastoral experience
- Must be licensed and ordained in the Baptist Church Ministry
- Should have an advanced degree (Master, Doctor of Divinity, etc., from an accredited Theological Seminary)
- THE INTERIM PASTOR WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED AS A CANDIDATE FOR PASTOR OF THE CHURCH
